    Affordable smith machine

Posted by Tim on Mar 27th 2021

I bought this machine to build total body strength. I am 6 feet 2 inches with athletic build. My daily habits neglect certain muscle groups and I wanted to improve the neglected areas. The machine is very affordable has a lot of capabilities. The weight sleeves and pulleys are plastic, but still effective. The small size of the machine is a bit cramped for a guy my size, but still doable. The bolts are zinc and will erode in humid environments, so I replaced them all with stainless since I am in florida near salt water. Overall it is very well built and functional. The first 2 weeks of using it has been very satisfying and effective. I feel stronger and less achy already. I purchased a 300lb Olympic weight set to go with the machine. All said and done, I have spent $1500 on this machine and I am very happy with it. Less gym travel and waiting for machines to open means more efficient use of my time exercising. I would recommend this gym

    Great machine!

Posted by Dan L. on Mar 26th 2021

When this machine was finally available again, I was notified by Marcy and was able to purchase it quickly. Shipping was faster than expected. I put it together by myself and at first I thought it was going to take forever, but I was able to finish it in a matter of hours. I have struggled putting smaller items together from IKEA more than I did this machine. Using it has been great because there are so many options in terms of exercises you can do with it. With the amount of parts that come with it, I was only missing one set screw on the bar end cap. I was able to take one from something else and put it on so no issues. The bearings move smoothly which makes the motion nice. The cables took a few trys to get set right in terms of adjusting the chains to allow for proper positioning during use. Overall, great buy and highly recommended!

    Great machine

Posted by Haley on Mar 19th 2021

I hate how the Smith is literally a pole and plastic at the end. Same as where the weights go.. but it is a great starter machine! It has all the motions you need for a great workout. I just hate the instructions. They are horrible but we did it! Also the bench foam came dented in but that is about it.. the smith machine not like gym you have to have weight on it in order for it to be steady.

    9010-G

Posted by Todd W on Mar 19th 2021

Let me start off by saying I hate working with my hands and putting things together because I usually want to just smash things out of frustration. With that said, I decided it would be best to put this together over a 5-day period, a few hours per day, since I work full time and my aggravation would go to Defcon 5 if I tried to do it in one day. So, at 55 years old, I ordered my first 9010g after selling my Marcy PM4500 machine. It took about 2 weeks to arrive from California to Ohio which was reasonable. The delivery driver called me while I was at work and I popped the garage door from my app and asked him to text me when done so I could close the door. I found the boxes in good shape when I arrived home later that day and started bringing down the contents piece by piece. After approximately 430 pieces later strewn across my basement floor, I had to ponder as to whether I had made a good decision. When I started to put my new machine together, (I pretty much did the entire thing by myself), my wife offered to help, (and she could have) but I knew we would end up in an argument because Todd does not do well putting things together as previously mentioned so I asked her to let me handle it. 5-days later I had the system put together. I did find a couple of helpful videos online for the cable routing and had to use my iPhone to blow up pictures from the assembly manual but other than that, it went together fine without any leftover parts! The machine works very smoothly and feels solid. Coming from the PM-4500 to the 9010G was a bit of a wakeup call because I could lift considerably more on the old machine. I am thinking that this new machine must be a true gage of the actual weight one is lifting. The bench is solid and slides very easily for the back adjustment. I really like the catches for the bar so I can workout without a spotter and I find the preacher attachment finally works very well. My only concern is being 6 feet 2 inches and doing military presses, I seem to be almost too tall for the machine, but I can make it work. I would also like to see some wheels on the bench as it gets moved around quite a bit. I also purchased some spring lock snap rings to put up where the cable cross over handles go so, I can more easily switch out attachments. Overall, this is a great machine and a great value at $1050 and I did not end up smashing anything because I have a praying wife!

    Lifesaver

Posted by Ryan T on Mar 11th 2021

The Marcy MD-9010G is a solid, quality machine. It has been a god-send recently in that I was a routine gym-goer that was displaced due to the pandemic. Really loving the ability to recreate so much of my lifting behavior in the comfort of my own garage.

    Unbeatable Value!

Posted by Leonard M. on Mar 2nd 2021

The MD-9010G is an unbeatable value. I will try to break down my review into sections: workouts, my recommendations, assembly, and conclusion. ~Workouts~ This machine has the capacity to do almost any weighted exercise you can think of doing in a gym. Chest: butterfly, smith bench press (regular, incline, and decline), barbell versions (regular, incline, and decline) if you buy a barbell, cable cross. And obviously if you have dumbbells then any presses and flys using the bench. Cant think of any other chest work outs I would need. Shoulders: shoulder presses from the smithbar in an upright position. Biceps: Preacher curl, standing curls from the smith bar, two handed or one handed curls from the lower cable using the included attachments. Triceps: Tricep extensions from either of the top cables using the rope or any other attachments included, over head presses from the smith machine, bent over tricep extensions from the lower cable. Back: Lat pulls connecting the top 2 cables together, single Lat pulls using the single arm attachments, bent over rows using the smith machine, seated rows from the lower cable, shoulder shrugs for your traps with the smith machine, goodmornings for your lower back with smith machine. Upper Legs: Squats using the smith machine(or barbell if you have one), Leg extensions from the bench, hamstring curls from the bench, leg kickbacks for gluts from the lower cable (although range is somewhat limited), adductor or abductor movements from the lower cable, leg presses against the smith bar while laying down on the ground or bench. Calfs: Admittedly this is the tough one. The only way to really get a calf workout is get a step platform and then go wild with the smithbar. I have named the exercises that I use from this machine. I am certain there are plenty others I havent discovered yet. ~Recommendations~ Get about 6-8 carabiner clips! And just leave one on each cable end. I got 3-inch ones. Youre welcome! Get a squat pad for the smithbar. For some people squats with a barbell or smithbar are simply NOT comfortable no matter how good your form is. Protect your flooring! There are 5 small points of contact for about 400 lbs (not including weights). So I recommend placing dense(not soft) rubber padding where those points sit. You dont have the place the padding under the whole smith machine but at least place it where those points of contact are. I used a rubber floor mat from home depot and just cut what I needed. Lube all the pulleys and cables! This is extremely important. You will wear out the cable soon otherwise as I have seen happen to some people already. After assembly I noticed the pulley retracted to starting position VERY slowly with a fairly light amount of weight. So much so that I could completely let go of 10 total added lbs and the the weight took like 5+ seconds to fall back down. I know light weight goes back down slowly but this was on another level. I called Marcy support and they told me any silicone lubricant or WD-40 is safe to use on the pulleys. Also, dont tighten the pulleys ALL the way. Attempt to spin the wheel by hand (it wont) and gauge that it can move without much resistance. ~Assembly~ Ive read a lot of the reviews on here and what peoples frustration are. I assembled it myself and heres what I learned. 1st) There are 3 boxes. Disregard anything to do with box 3 until your entire smith machine is assembled. Box 3 is the bench and the bench ONLY. So open box 1 and 2 and dont mix them up. Box 1 is mostly the main frame parts while box 2 is mostly parts/pieces components. Just dont mix up box 1 and 2. Each page tells you “almost” every piece you need for that page with the box their located in. In my assembly everything was in the correct box it said it was. 2nd) Follow each page in order obviously. BUT as a few reviewers have said only open the screws/nuts/bots parts that you need for THAT page. I recommend flipping pages ahead when youre confused about what order to do something rather than assuming. One example is a lot of people were confused about where to attach the pulleys as it doesnt say. And they are correct. If you flip ahead you will noticed that the pulleys mount mostly to each other by the tension of the cables themselves. 3rd) Dont tighten anything till the end. Im not entirely sure if this was absolutely necessary but I followed the instruction and life turned out ok. 4th) Get or borrow a socket wrench with a 5/8 socket. Youre welcome again! All in all it took me about 10 hours. ~Conclusion~ It does lack being able to adjust the cross cables to any height. It also doesnt include a pull-up bar or a dip station. But no worries! If you really want those you can find a pull-up/dip bar that attaches to the wall for about $100-150. Easily better than paying hundreds more for the bigger brother, the SM-4033. All in all it is a no brainer! This machine is insane and for $1,050 you wont easily find a better value than this. I love it! Hope this helps!
